Quick and Easy Firecracker Shrimp – Gluten Free

For this recipe I used raw peeled shrimp, quinoa flour, cayenne pepper, salt free spicy seasoning, corn starch, and corn meal.  The other items pictured (mushrooms and sweet potato shreds) are for my side dish.

The first thing I did was pour flour, corn meal, corn starch, and seasonings into a bag.  I used a sandwich size bag and coated four shrimp at a time by shaking them in the bag.  Of course the bigger the bag the more you can coat at once.

Once coated, place the shrimp in hot oil and cook for three minutes on each side.

I love mixing sweet and savory so I decided to serve the shrimp with sweet potato straws and portabella mushrooms.

I mixed hot chili paste and honey to make the dipping sauce.

Vegetti Product Review

Infomercials love to sell us dreams.  Who can forget the knife that can cut through a penny, the belt that gives you six pack abs, or the contraption that cooks your appetizer, entrée, and dessert all at the same time?  I can’t say if any of these items actually work since I haven’t tried them.  My approach to infomercials is curious but cautious.  It’s not all about the validity of the product either.  There’s something about ordering over the phone that doesn’t sit right with me.  (Though as a child I ordered many things from the Home Shopping Network with my mothers checkbook.  That’s a whole other blog post…)

These days I have the fear that once I give my card number over the phone to these mystery companies it will be used for evil.  So instead of ordering, I wait to see if these items will make it to the As Seen on TV section of my local store.  That recently happened with the Vegetti.  The idea of replacing pasta with vegetable spirals seems like a win win, right? At the low price of $14.99, I had to give it a try.

First things first.  I hate hard plastic packaging.  Who invented this stuff? It’s nearly impossible to open.  Fortunately the Vegetti packaging has perforation for easy removal.  That’s one point for the Vegetti.

The construction seems to be simple but effective.

The metal handles feel comfortable in my hand.

SAM_0119

There are two size options, one on each side.  There’s even this nifty lid to use when your veggies get down to a nub.

SAM_0117SAM_0118SAM_0120

Now it’s time to give it a try.  If it doesn’t work as advertised I at least walk away with 13 or so recipes from the little booklet.

I decided to give it a spin with a sweet potato.  The first thing I noticed is I couldn’t really see a difference between the thin cuts and the thick cuts.  They all looked the same.  Besides that it did a decent job at least until I got the middle.  The Vegetti spiralized it to a point.  Seeing no other choice I started on the other side.  I never got a chance to use the lid since I ended up with two pointy ends instead of a nub.

I ended up using a knife to cut the remainder into fries.  The next dilemma came with cleaning.  I found it difficult to clean the blades.  It should have come with a tool to clean the blades.  Without it I was tempted to use my fingers which clearly isn’t safe.

Overall I give the Vegetti two out of five stars.  Here’s why:

It was easy to grip.

-It was easy to create the spirals.

In that sense it does what is advertised.  The grip and blades work well.   Though the cons outweigh the pros:

-Vegetables are spiralized into points which could be wasteful.

-There is no visible difference between thin and thick cuts.

-It’s difficult to clean which could mean it’s only good for one use.

Fruit Pie…Cobbler – Gluten Free

You can call it pie.  You can call it cobbler.  I call it delicious.  Best of all, it’s easy.  I started with a pre made pie crust.  Of course you can make your own if you so choose.  I rolled my dough in between parchment paper and transferred it to a baking dish.

Next I filled the dough with fruit.  I used blueberries, sliced strawberries, and diced apples.

SAM_0077

Next I added a few pats of butter, some cinnamon, and some brown sugar.

SAM_0078SAM_0079

I put the remaining dough on top in no particular pattern.  (It all tastes the same.) Then I baked for an hour.  This was the result.  It’s not particularly pretty but the flavor is outstanding and the smell….the smell is glorious.  You can spoon it out or slice it.

I went at it with a spoon while it was still hot and had almond milk ice cream on the side.  Try not to eat it all in one sitting.

Crave Crossbody

As much as I love my hobos and satchels, it is time to start scaling down.  With upcoming events and outings cross body bags are so much more convenient.  As I begin my search I see that a lot of shoppers are on the same page as me.  I’m adding cross body bags to my cart as I shop online.  By the time I go to check out, half of my selections are no longer available.  It’s almost like I have to buy each bag as I see it instead of filling my shopping cart.

Shopping in person is not much different.  Really the only difference is I’m the one grabbing the last style of each bag.  As I make my way to the counter I have to endure the stares and dirty looks of the people who weren’t as fortunate to find these bags.

There is no shortage of colors, fabrics, and textures to choose from. I love the ones that double as cross body bags and clutches.  They are great for going from day to night.   Here are some of my favorites.

Some of these may even show up in an upcoming Saturday Sale…stay tuned!

SALE!!!

When I am not modeling or acting I’m shopping for myself or my clients.  For me shopping is a career, a hobby, and therapy.  I love it.  Often times when I am in search of something in particular I stumble across things completely unrelated that I cannot leave behind.  That has resulted in a surplus of brand new unused items.

Instead of leaving these items in storage, I’ve decided it’s time to find them good homes.  I will start a new post called “Saturday Sale” showcasing items you can purchase.  All items are authentic.  I do not believe in counterfeits.  All items are new (unused/unworn) unless otherwise stated.  Most items will still have tags.

Don’t let the “Saturday Sale” fool you.  Posts may be any day of the week so check often.  These days every day feels like Saturday to me, hence the name.  When I worked a 9-5 I was usually conscious of each day because I needed to know how many days there were until Saturday.  Now that I work for myself, everyday feels like Saturday.  I work often but it feels like play.  Every day feels like Saturday.

Oh I almost forgot the most important part.  All items will be well below retail.  Check back soon and continue to check often.  Happy Shopping!

From My Collection to Yours,

Shira Renee
